An account in Georgia is not a resilient tax hideout. Anyone who relies on the fact that the bank sits far away and the domestic tax office learns nothing, confuses distance with invisibility. I think this confusion is the decisive mistake: a foreign bank account does not answer a single question about its own tax liability.
Georgia participates in the international exchange of financial account data. Nevertheless, three things have to be checked separately: What does the bank report? Which income or assets belong in your own tax return? What documents does the competent authority require? The answers depend on the country of residence, the year concerned and the specific account relationship. A bank report does not replace your own statement.
What Data Exchange with Georgia Actually Means
The Common Reporting Standard, CRS for short, forms the basis for the automatic exchange of certain financial account data. The OECD country review on Georgia confirms the start of the exchange in 2024. However, this does not result in worldwide, seamless real-time access to every account.
Crucial are reportable institutions and accounts, tax residency, activated exchange relationships and reporting periods. After OECD CRS Rulebook This includes in particular identification data, account number and account balance or account value. Depending on the account type, for example, interest, dividends or gross proceeds are added. Such reporting data is not a finished calculation of taxable profit.
The timing is also different. The Swiss Partner States Overview specifies for Georgia the entry into force of 1. January 2025. The Test report of 28. August 2026 The first exchange is planned for the current year 2026. Anyone who writes “everywhere since 2024” leaves out this difference. For other countries of residence, the respective exchange relationship must be examined separately.
The bank asks for residency, not a desired address
I would therefore start the exam on the person. Where is tax residence? Was there a move? Are there links to several countries? Which tax identification number belongs to which country?
The OECD rules for self-reporting Relates to tax residencies. In the case of multiple establishments, the relevant implementation and possible agreement rules shall be technically assessed; Selecting a suitable address is not enough. Nationality, residency and tax residence are different issues. A Georgian address or account opened there does not decide this verification.
In the case of a company account, another level is added: account holder, classification of the company and, if applicable, controlling persons must be kept separate. I would therefore never treat a company account like a private savings account. Nor can the place of management be inferred from the country of the bank.
Germany: Explain earnings and prove foreign affairs
For persons taxable in Germany, the concrete income must be checked. Section 32d(3) EStG requires in principle to indicate taxable capital income without German capital income tax deduction in the income tax return. Whether interest remains in a Georgian account or is transferred to Germany does not replace this classification.
From this I distinguish the mere existence of the account. The obligation to declare taxable income does not result in a blanket statement that any foreign account opening is to be indicated on the same form solely for this reason. Additional notification obligations may become relevant for other foreign matters; They need to be specifically tested.
Section 90(2) AO calls for increased participation in foreign matters, in particular the clarification of the facts and the acquisition of necessary evidence. This is not a general reversal of the burden of proof with the demand to prove one’s own tax exemption par excellence. Practically, I would keep bank statements, interest statements and documents on the origin of larger payments in an orderly manner.
Austria: Foreign interest rates are not automatically paid
For Austria, this describes Federal Ministry of Finance on the treatment of capital assets: If a domestic office is missing for the tax deduction, corresponding income must in principle be included in the tax return. As an example, the authority cites interest from a foreign bank. Account type and income type remain important for further assessment.
The disclosure of tax-relevant circumstances shall be based on: Section 119 of the Austrian Federal Tax Code. German rules on participation cannot simply be transferred. My practical standard remains: Bank documents and own declaration must fit together in a comprehensible way. In the case of withholding taxes, an additional check must be made as to whether and how an offset or relief is possible.
Switzerland: Record balances and income separately
In Switzerland, the view on interest rates alone is also not enough. In the ordinary taxation of natural persons, the relevant assets for the Cantonal property taxation take into account. The specific declaration is based on the requirements of the competent canton.
The Canton of Zurich explains the information in List of securities and dealing with foreign withholding taxes. Values in foreign currencies are to be converted into Swiss francs for the declaration. Account balance, gross income and foreign tax deduction are various information. An account without interest can therefore still be relevant for the asset declaration.
Automatic data transmission does not do this work. Nor does a later start of exchange create a prior exemption from existing declaration obligations.
My decision-making process before opening or verifying an account
For me, an additional bank account belongs in a comprehensible order. This fits the question: Asset structure and provisionPurpose, property and jurisdiction must remain comprehensible. A confidential banking relationship is different from concealing tax-relevant facts.
- Record person and period. Account holders, tax residencies and affected years. Clarify open residency issues first.
- Determine the account purpose. Private reserve, payment transactions or company account. Hold on to whom the money is economically attributable.
- Document three tests separately. Assign each bank report according to CRS, own declaration and administrative cooperation to the competent state.
- Vote numbers. Recognize initial stock, deposits, payouts, income, fees and closing stock. A transfer between own accounts is not only because of the receipt of payment a new income.
- Secure documents. bring together annual statements, income certificates, withholding tax documents and self-disclosure. Request missing documents specifically from the bank.
- technically clarify deviations. If previous declarations and documents do not agree, then rectification obligations and possible legal consequences shall be included without undue delay in qualified professionals.
This order corresponds to my Methodology for preparing a sustainable structure: first grasp the actual situation, then make decisions. The useful next step is a complete database for the professional examination.
Where my classification ends
I am Norbert Péterentrepreneur, neither lawyer nor tax consultant. This article offers orientation and no individual tax advice. Residency, taxable income, credits and possible corrections are among the appropriately licensed professionals for each country concerned.
A missing information is not automatically tax evasion; Named for Germany Section 370 AO other requirements. The legal consequences in Austria and Switzerland must be examined separately in accordance with their provisions. Nor is a foreign account automatically problematic. The decisive factor is whether the purpose, information and tax treatment fit together. I would not base any decision on supposed invisibility.
