When the prices of US government bonds fall significantly, their yields increase. This increases the pressure on stocks, real estate, loans and any structure that relies on cheap financing. An uncontrolled stock crash does not follow automatically. However, the scope for high-risk investments is becoming narrower.
On 3. As of September 2026, the official yield of ten-year US government bonds was 4.77 percent. On 26 September In August, it was 4.66 percent. The often mentioned mark of 5 percent was thus close, but not yet reached. For me, the crucial question is not whether a certain index will fall tomorrow. The decisive factor is whether assets, companies and liquidity carry a further rise in interest rates without forced sales or hectic decisions.
Why do bond prices fall when yields rise?
An existing fixed-rate bond becomes less attractive as new bonds offer higher interest rates. Their market price has to fall in order for their return to a new buyer to match the current interest rate environment. The American stock exchange supervisory authority explicitly explains this connection: market interest rates and prices of fixed-rate bonds generally move in opposite directions.
How strongly a price reacts depends, among other things, on the duration, coupon and duration. Long running times regularly react more sensitively. Anyone who can hold a single bond until maturity is also in a different situation than an investor who has to sell beforehand. Also, a bond fund works differently than a single bond with a fixed repayment date.
What Do Rising US Government Bond Yields Mean for Stocks?
Higher returns create a more attractive alternative to stocks. At the same time, the interest rate at which future corporate profits are valued increases. Particularly high ratings come under pressure. Companies with a large need for financing also feel higher borrowing costs. This can burden investments, profits and valuations.
Nevertheless, the equation is not: bonds fall, stocks fall immediately. Stock prices respond simultaneously to profits, growth, inflation, monetary policy, geopolitical risks and expectations. The Federal Reserve Financial Stability Report of May 2026 described the valuation levels of equities as increased. At the same time, maturity premiums on US government bonds had risen and market liquidity had deteriorated temporarily. This connection justifies attention, but not a crash forecast.
Where the rise in interest rates directly affects entrepreneurs
For entrepreneurs, the view of the securities account is not enough. Higher long-term interest rates can make loans more expensive, make follow-up financing more difficult and burden the value of interest-sensitive assets. A company with sufficient liquidity reserves reacts differently than a structure that has to extend loans, submit collateral or finance distributions in the coming months.
Then there is the geographical level. Assets, companies and accounts in several countries do not eliminate interest rate risk. They can create additional currency issues, different banking processes and separate legal responsibilities. A good structure must therefore also work if the owner, bank and asset are not in the same country.
An international address alone does not protect value. A structure only becomes resilient through clear ownership relationships, documented decision-making processes, achievable liquidity and technically tested contracts.
My interest rate stress test in five steps
1. Capture liquidity needs for 12 to 24 months
First, private expenses, taxes, redemptions, investments and operational obligations are part of a common timeline. Those who need money in the short term should not be dependent on selling long-running assets in a weak market phase.
2. Make maturities and fixed interest rates visible
Loans include maturity, fixed interest rates, collateral and possible variation margin requirements. Bonds include maturity, duration, credit rating and the question of whether a repayment can be waited for. This overview shows where another increase in returns works first.
3. Test concentrations separately
A depot can look broad on paper and still depend on the same risk several times. Technology stocks, growth stocks, real estate, long-term bonds and leveraged investments can simultaneously suffer from higher interest rates. The decisive factor is not only the number of positions, but their common risk driver.
4. Clarify ownership, liability and access
Who owns which asset? Who can decide? Which company bears what risk? Which bank documents are current? These questions are easily postponed in quiet times. Under market pressure, they decide whether a reaction is possible in an orderly manner.
5. Defining decisions in advance
A workable plan defines thresholds and responsibilities. What reserve must not be invested? When is a financing considered? Who talks to bank, tax consultant and lawyer? What documents must be available? This prevents spontaneous changes of direction due to individual headlines.
What a structure can do and cannot do
A clear structure can separate liquidity, shorten decision-making processes and make risks more understandable. It can also determine which values serve the operational business and which are held in the long term. However, it does not eliminate market losses, inflation, currency risks or wrong decisions.
That is why I think little of blanket promises of protection. Company, holding company, foundation or cooperative are not an automatic response to rising interest rates. Each solution depends on goal, ownership, financing, actual place of management, documentation and implementation. Legal, tax and supervisory consequences must be assessed by licensed professionals in individual cases.
First of all, a clean inventory is helpful. The contribution Protecting assets: structure before savings book deepens this thought. The The Budapester’s methodology Shows how goals, inventory, technical examination and implementation are separated. For an orderly detection, the 75 minutes structure check serve as a working framework.
The next decision
Rising US government bond yields are not evidence of the imminent stock crash. They are a strong warning sign for recalculating financing, liquidity and concentrations. Who only clarifies in the fall of the price, which values are available and who is allowed to decide, has already lost time.
My decision-making framework is tight: securing liquidity, recording maturities, checking concentrations, clarifying responsibilities and only then deciding on conversions. Geography can be part of a viable structure. It does not replace a robust order.
